P. Michael Jerchlaw - Associate

Monique Lariviere

As of January 2012, Monique is joining the firm as a part-time associate, with considerable legal and First Nations policy research experience including the preparation and drafting of briefs and submissions on the subject of Indigenous peoples’ rights to government. Monique’s skills include legal and policy research, analysis and drafting for various Aboriginal communities and organizations and has included the opportunity to assist with a presentation to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Monique studied law at McGill University in Montreal, where she obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) in 2006, and articled with a small law firm on a wide range of matters affecting people living in rural Manitoba people from criminal law to wills and estates, obtaining her call to the Bar in Manitoba in 2011.

Monique will be primarily responsible for legal research, analysis and drafting in the firm’s First Nations litigation and research and writing in the firm’s work for First Nations on Aboriginal rights and Treaties. Prior to beginning her career in law, Monique obtained a wide and multi-disciplinary understanding and skill set relating to the impacts of government policy on First Nations economic development and education. Prior to joining the firm, Monique worked as a research assistant on an inter-university research project for Dr. Roderick Macdonald, in the area of Aboriginal economic development. She was also a member of a project team in a study of educational cost drivers to First Nations education. Monique also has worked as a secondary school teacher in a First Nations community, teaching grade 7 and mature students in St. Theresa Point First Nation in 2005.

Monique’s experience includes working at First Peoples’ House of McGill University and the Quebec Native Women association, where she worked as a research assistant for indigenous rights advocate Ellen Gabriel of Kanesatake (Ms. Gabriel is also known for her important role as a traditional spokesperson for the Kanesatake Mohawk people in the Oka dispute of 1990).

Monique’s considerable research and writing experience is supplemented by a strong academic foundation, completing a B.A. in English Literature (Honours) in 1998 from McGill University, an M.A. in English Literature in 2000 from the University of Toronto, and a B. Ed. from the University of Toronto in 2001. She was raised in the Manitoba communities of Ste. Rose du lac, Dauphin, and Swan River and is a member of Sapotaweyak Cree Nation.
