Sharon Mason

Sharon has been working with the firm for several years as a part time associate and has recently joined the firm in 2011 as a full time associate, with considerable experience as an associate lawyer with another Manitoba law firm and as an advisor to several First Nations organizations. Sharon obtained her B.A. in native studies and criminology in 1999 from the University of Manitoba, and studied law at the University of Saskatchewan and obtained her law degree in 2003. She articled for P. Michael Jerch while at the MKO Chiefs legal department in 2003 and 2004 and obtained her call to the bar in Manitoba in 2004.

Sharon practices in First Nations corporate and commercial transactions and Aboriginal law litigation and First Nations governance. Over the years Sharon has had the opportunity to work with a number of lawyers and law firms in her capacity with several aboriginal organizations and on behalf of Wasagamach First Nation. Sharon has had occasion to work for and with Grand Chiefs, Chiefs, advisors and First Nations academics including studying with Sharon Venne. She has had the opportunity to be involved in multi-million dollar land sale and mortgage transactions and urban reserve land conversion, First Nation hotel and casino expansion financing, review and development of First Nation by-law consolidation and enforcement, commercial franchising and leasing on reserve, and negotiating impacts benefits agreements and joint venture and sub-contractor agreements in the East Side development. Sharon brings to the firm analytical and strategic skills and an on the ground understanding of First Nations governance, business and operations.

Sharon is a member of Wasagamach First Nation and was raised on the Sandy Lake First Nation in Ontario. She has had the opportunity to maintain close ties with that community and Wasagamach First Nation, regularly spending time in the community. She is a dedicated mother of five and is now recently a very proud (and young) grandmother.
